Happy Black History Month!
This month at Reading Time with the Queens, we are living up to our theme song's intro by taking a stand and making a scene! Black history is all around us, weaved into the very fabric of our society, especially here in the United States of America. We've partnered with the Pocatello Branch of the NAACP to put on an amazing program for kids and their families that will encourage us to take a dive into Black History Month.
For our craft, we commissioned local artist and Reading Time Buddy Miss Kamiah to create coloring book pages. Each page coincides with scenes and themes found in our two books: We March by Shane W. Evans and The Year We Learned to Fly by Jacqueline Woodson and Rafael López. To top it off, our local branch of the NAACP is providing crayons to bring our pages to life, including boxes of crayons in a variety of skin tones.
You can download the project and then watch this tutorial on how to fold it into a book. Remember that the page is sized to 11x17 inches (tabloid size), but it can fit on 8.5x11 inch (letter) in a pinch.
If you would like, we have also formatted Miss Kamiah's art onto regular coloring sheets.
We hope you will join us for making this craft in person this Saturday, February 8th! (The roads might be snowy, so please prioritize your safety if it is too scary.)
